New Educational Opportunities for the Unemployed

Government Aid

In May, President Barack Obama announced changes that are going to help unemployed workers receive financial aid for education.

The Labor Department will ask states to make changes so that unemployed workers will be able to keep receiving monthly unemployed checks even if they decide to attend a community college or other forms of training.

Under the existing rules, the unemployed typically loose unemployment benefits if they decide to pursue education.

In addition, Pell Grants will receive a boost in July 2009, allowing low-income students to receive up to $5,350 in financial aid.
